Application of Plasma Cutting
Application of Plasma Cutting

Developed in the 20th century plasma cutting has been used as an economical method of cutting metal in many industries such as the automotive and military sectors as well as various other goods manufacturers.

A conceptually simple mechanism, a plasma cutter consists of what is referred to as a torch. The torch contains an extremely constricted nozzle through which passes gas. The gas can be anything from surrounding air to nitrogen, argon or pure oxygen. Through this gas an electrical arc is sent through, raising the temperature of the gas which causes it to enter a 4th state of matter- known as plasma.

As the plasma cutter can pass through metal with little resistance it makes for an extremely efficient and precise method of cutting. Plasma can reach up to approximately 30,000 Fahrenheit (16,649 Celcius) and at this temperature, metal is reduced into molten slag, additional gas is directed around the perimeter of the cutting area to shield the cut and maintain precision.

Large industrial plasma cutters make a quick job of creating metal I-beams for instance or other metal sheet goods. On a smaller scale plasma cutters can be used for finer artistic work or boring through thick metal – such as safe doors.

Plasma cutters can also be used for welding, machining and engineering support. Applying plasma in welding is especially beneficial as charging the gas with electric current causes a barrier to form around the weld point, protecting it from oxidation.
